| November 8, 2008: On November 4, Election Day, the Bibb County Commission passed an ill-conceived “Cemetery Ordinance” which effectively blocks our project. We are optimistic that this unfortunate piece of legislation can be overturned, with the support of our beloved community. Despite “the recent unpleasantness”, work continues at Summerland. We have completed bush hogging the main burial area, resulting in a dramatic change of appearance. A relatively large flock of bluebirds is enjoying the open forest floor where their insect prey is more accessible. We are finishing cleanup and working on roads and trails. Soon we will begin marking burial spaces, in accordance with Georgia law. July 7, 2008: • A native and invasive plant survey has been done. We will continue to update the list as fall-blooming plants show their colors. Hundreds of white flags now mark areas with unusual or especially desirable plants such as Georgia bear grass, longleaf pines, black walnut, orange butterfly weed, and dawnflowers. Invasive plants are being removed. • Red flags mark hazards such as fire ants or poison ivy. • The Nolina Trail is clear, providing a nice walk through some of the scenic areas of the property. (When visiting the property, please stay on marked roads and trails.) • An old home site on the property has been cleaned up and serves as an historical point of interest. The remains of an old shed have been removed. • Roads have been cleared of brush and a lot of glass and other trash has been removed. • Storm damage from "the Mother's Day tornado" has been cleared and work is well underway on logging debris. April 30, 2008: The Summerland Group, Inc. has cleared the difficult hurdle of securing a conditional use permit from Bibb County Planning and Zoning We hope that once our project is well underway, the positive impact of the project will be noticeable. We want Summerland Natural Cemetery to be an asset to the Davis Road community. |
